Monthly Mix - October: Doomtree Special
Our resident mixtape master, Geoff Owen returns with his monthly compilation - and for October it is all based around a mutually loved rap collective, Doomtree.
If an alien came down from space one day and told me that she was going to delete all the music in the world apart from two of my favourite acts I would choose to save Opeth and Doomtree. I don’t think Ian Choose My Music will ever let me do an Opeth special so this month’s theme is Doomtree. You can imagine that an alien has come down from space and deleted all other music if it helps.
Many readers will be familiar with this Minneapolis hip hop collective so I’ve tried to choose some of the more obscure tracks and there’s one that probably shouldn’t be in here at all but the bassline is too filthy to miss out.
Lazerbeak – Legend Recognize Legend
Lazerbeak makes lava bangers and this is the purest example of a lava banger you could hope for. This comes from his album of lava bangers called Lava Bangers. This lava banger is one of my favourite lava bangers because it’s utterly outrageous. It has shotgun noises, huge vocal hooks, Jay Z making a funny noise and breaking glass sound effects. If only it had a few sirens in there too.
Sims – Burn It Down
This is from the album Bad Time Zoo, produced entirely by Lazerbeak so it’s full of lava bangers. There’s a video on Youtube of Sims performing this in Birmingham in which you can see me dancing like an utter bassoon. I shall not link to it here.
P.O.S. – All of It
From the latest P.O.S. album We Don’t Even Live Here this song has some of my favourite lines in it. Also, that bit near the end when the beat stops and then kicks in again makes me do a silly dance every time.
I'm probably not welcome at your protest
Say I'm out of my damn mind
Looking to break glass, not holding a damn sign
We ain't gotta throw stones at a glass house
We break in, just so we can smash out
Doomtree – Hot Monotony
Doomtree released a series of albums called False Hopes that include standalone songs and early versions of tracks that would later appear on group or solo albums. This is from the first one of these and is one of my favourite Doomtree crew tracks.
Prof ft P.O.S. – Broadcasting
OK so this probably shouldn’t be in here. Prof isn’t part of Doomtree but he is from the same city and P.O.S. is on the track too. If you want to test out the bass on your speakers then this Mux Mool produced track is the thing to use. Filth.
Dessa – Warsaw
Continuing the filthy basslines we have this Paper Tiger produced track from Dessa’s latest album Parts of Speech. You may know Dessa from The State of Music Volume 4 http://choosemymusicrecords.bandcamp.com/album/the-state-of-music-vol-4 and we featured her on the site back in 2012 http://choosemymusic.org/blogstateofmusicarticles/blog/the-state-of-music/the-state-of-music-part-50-minnesota-dessa
Mike Mictlan – Zero Kool Aid Pt.2
Remember back in the olden days (2006) there was that song that went “Got my Vans on but they look like sneakers”? Well, in this track taken from Doomtree’s 2010 Daytrotter session, Mike Mictlan takes that beat and absolutely destroys it with ridiculous rapping skills.
Paper Tiger – Bully Plank
Paper Tiger is very clever at making beats. After being pummelled by Mictlan’s words for 4 minutes, take a break and allow yourself to be pummelled by Paper Tiger’s plinky piano.
Sims – Like You Mean It
This is from Sims’ False Hopes record. I love everything about this track. The piano, the strings, the bassline, those skittering drums and of course Sims delivers with the raps as usual.
Cecil Otter – Let Me Tell You
Another one from the Daytrotter session. Cecil Otter raps Let Me Tell You from his Rebel Yellow album over the instrumental of Grizzly Bear’s Two Weeks. Beards across the internet explode.
Cecil Otter – Boxcar Diaries
I can’t get enough of rap songs that sample chanting monks. Give me all the monks. Add in the Pixies references and that haunting guitar line and you have a beautiful hip hop masterpiece .
P.O.S. – Optimist
Because P.O.S. did the thing with the cups before Anna Kendrick. If you’re a huge nerd like me you can watch P.O.S. learning how to do the thing with the cups here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8s1YlU62jk&list=FLj8xBBtTXQwLoI8ibkCAtJg&index=5 and then watch the video for the song here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OpHJUJIrpU
Dessa – Scuffle
I love angry Dessa. She doesn’t appear very often but when she does you’d better watch out.
Doomtree – Drumsticks
I had to include this because it’s just the greatest and a nice way to end the mix with a verse from every Doomtree MC.
