New Music For Mondays Canada Special (Part 6) - BESTiE
We continue our Canaidan music discovery series by spending our 3rd week in a row checking out the bands of Vancouver.
The sign of a great band is when you really struggle to categorise them, Arcade Fire sound like Arcade Fire right? And BESTiE...well they sound like BESTiE, which is an especially brilliant thing - as you will hear;
CMM: Hi BESTiE, welcome to Choose My Music & our New Music For Mondays Canadian special series. Can we start off with you introducing the band and telling us where in the world we would find you?
HELLO, we are Andrew, Tristan, Rob and Daniel of BESTiE and we're from Vancouver Canada.
CMM: How long have BESTiE been together and how did it all start?
We have been together for two years. It started with a bunch of friends all sharing a sweaty jam space getting together one really hot summer day.
CMM: How would you best describe the music you make and which bands from past and present would you point to as an influence?
We like to describe ourselves as a post wave, posi-core, tropi-vibes indie pop band. Maybe also surf rock? Were influenced by acts like The Police, Johnny Marr, Paul Simon and Vampire Weekend but also stuff like Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Gwen Stefani & Juicy J. Between all of us it's pretty diverse I think.
CMM: We couldn't find a great deal of music around by you, but what we did find we have loved. Could you give us a run down of what has been released so far?
We have a demo called Foolish Hearts and two singles, Pineapple and Asleep On The Bus and remixes of Foolish and Asleep also.
CMM: I know little bits about Vancouver, which is mainly hearsay due to having never visited myself, how would best describe the city?
Vancouver is on the West Coast of Canada. It's a really nice place with mountains and ocean and forest all together. It doesn't get as cold as the rest of Canada in the Winter where they have snow on the ground all winter but it does rain a lot as it's a temperate rain forest climate. The summers are amazing. You should come visit
CMM: And what is the music scene like out there?
The music scene has a history with a lot of punk acts but I think it's pretty well rounded these days. We have awesome acts like Japandroids, Carly Rae Jepsen, Cyril Hahn, Grimes, Mother Mother and lots more that we like to call our own. There's a big underground scene with East Vancouver bands and then a more mainstream scene.
CMM: Any favourite venues?
Well I work for as the talent buyer booking acts there so i'm biased but that's my favourite. There are other great venues like The Biltmore, The Cobalt and beloved dive bar The Astoria.
CMM: When we first got in touch you were involved in the competition - could you tell us a little more about it?
YES, the Peak Performance Project is put on by local radio station The Peak 102.7fm, each year they pick 20 finalists / acts and send them off to a week long music bootcamp where they get to work on all sorts of different aspects of their music. Ultimately it's a contest with over $200,000 in prize money for the top 5 winners. There's various challenges you have to do like make a video. Our video for Asleep On The Bus was for it. Other challenges include doing a charity event which is really cool and rewarding. For ours we ended up putting on a multi day and venue all ages music festival call #Safefest which was really cool. All in all it's been an amazing experience to be able to focus on doing what you love seriously and improve your craft. They announce the top 5 on Tuesday so it's anxious times as were at the end of the program now!
CMM: We also discovered another - have you ever been mistaken for the Japaneese all girl pop band?
Haha, yes I think we've had some Facebook fans think were associated but that's it really. Hopefully we get to meet them sometime.
CMM: Are there any further releases on the horizon so that we can enjoy your music some more?
Yes :) We have a new single that we did with a Swiss / Vancouver act, Rykka coming out soon called "Together". We're working on our debut album now to be released early in the new year with a local producer Howard Redekopp who's worked with some of our favourite local acts like Tegan and Sara. We will have some new singles leading up to it in the next few months.
CMM: And finally, where can people stalk you online if they wish to find out more
